Shoal Bay Waste Disposal site Tip Tags

- Tags are still being delivered; if you have not received the tags by Monday 17 September 2007 please call the Council.
- Landfill can still be used as normal by residents. We are giving until the end of October as a grace period, so residents get used to bring their tags to the landfill and to work out any bugs.
- Renters will need to contact their real estate/ property owners to get their tags if they haven’t received one by the 17 September 2007.
- Domestic lane will be used by tag holders; people without tags will need to use the commercial lane.
- People who reside in commercial/industrial premises should apply in writing stating they are caretakers and will only be disposing of a domestic quantity of waste before they can purchase a tag for $25 for a year.
- Replacement tags are $3.
- Persons who live outside of the Darwin municipal area may purchase tags at $25 for a year.
WHY HAS COUNCIL INTRODUCED AN ELECTRONIC ACCESS KEY?
Landfill, garbage and recycling charges in Darwin are among the lowest in Australia.
To keep waste fees and charges as low as possible for all Darwin householders we
need to ensure that while residents can enter freely, all other users must pay a fee.
WHO WILL RECEIVE AN ELECTRONIC ACCESS KEY?
Approximately 26,000 domestic Darwin households will receive one single electronic
access key. Investment property owners will receive one electronic access key for
their own and each of their rental properties (delivered as requested in their response
to Council’s letter from June 2007).
Additional keys for Darwin residents are also available for an annual payment of
$25.00.
Electronic landfill access keys are not available to commercial and/or industry
customers as this system is for domestic households and waste in domestic
quantities only.
ELECTRONIC ACCESS KEY DATA
The electronic access key does not hold any data other than a unique identification
number. Only Darwin City Council is able to link the electronic access key number to
a particular residential address and its owner.
WHEN WILL THE ELECTRONIC ACCESS KEY BE INTRODUCED?
The electronic access keys will be distributed during July 2007 and can be used
straight away.
LOST KEYS
If a key is lost or stolen the resident will be issued with replacement key(s) at a cost of
$3.00. The old key number will be deleted from the system and the key will not be able
to be used to access the landfill.
PALMERSTON AND LITCHFIELD DOMESTIC HOUSEHOLDS
Householders who are not Darwin residents can purchase a landfill access key for
the annual price of $25.00 at the weighbridge or from Darwin City Council’s
Environmental Management Services from August 2007.
The $25 price reflects the cost of the service provided. After 12 month householders
can “recharge the access key through payment of the annual fee. If the annual fee is
not received by the due date the computer system will not allow further access to the
landfill with the expired key.
WHAT IF A RESIDENT FORGETS TO BRING THE KEY TO THE LANDFILL?
Initially, during the first 3 months, free access maybe granted if the customer is listed in
Council’s garbage fee database. After this “introduction period”, proof of residency in the Darwin municipality must be produced.
WHERE DOES A TENANT GET THE LANDFILL ACCESS KEY?
The electronic landfill key will be available from the landlord or Managing Agents, to
renter/lessee for rental properties.
