Wheelie bin care

Wheelie bins for regular weekly rubbish collection are provided to all households in the Darwin Municipality serviced by Council's collection contractor. We all know that unwrapped foodscraps thrown into bins attract flies and result in unwanted smells so it is important to wrap your rubbish well, especially in Darwin's warm tropical climate.

Hanging a suitable pesticide product inside the bin to help guard against maggots and flies is also recommended. These products are available in most local supermarkets.

Always keep your wheelie bin lid closed when rubbish is inside, hose it out on a regular basis and clean it thoroughly with antiseptic solution at least once a month. After cleaning it is a good idea to air the empty bin for at least 24 hours. Commercial bin cleaning services are available if required.

Within flats and units where residents share bins it is the contractor's responsibility to retrieve all bins from the storage compound for clearance and to return them once empty. In this situation, no bins should be placed out on the kerb for clearance. The contractor is also responsible for washing the bins out at least once a month in this shared arrangement.
