Home composting

Home composting returns organic matter to the soil, provides an excellent potting mix or mulch for the garden, makes a perfect fertiliser for home use when mixed with blood and bone, and is excellent for the disposal of vegetables and fruit peelings.

To encourage home composting, Council makes compost bins available at  the Civic Centre at the low cost of $37.50 per bin. This bin is particularly suitable for Darwin's tropical climate, is quick and easy to install and provides a clean and very manageable system for home use. The bin itself is made from recycled material. Home gardeners can establish an excellent composting system with two or three bins. A helpful brochure on home composting comes with each bin.
