Citizenship

The Darwin City Council holds special ceremonies each year, on behalf of the Australian Government's Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, to welcome our nation's newest citizens. If you're a permanent resident and have lived in Australia for two or more years, you may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship. Some conditions apply.

You will need to be a permanent resident who has lived in Australia for two years in the previous five years, including for 12 months in the past two years.

You will also need to be of good character, have a basic knowledge of English (this won't apply if you are 50 years old or over) and have an adequate knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges that go with being an Australian citizen. Importantly, you must intend to live in, or maintain a close ongoing association with Australia.

To find out if you are eligible, you can call the Citizen Information Line 131880, or visit the website www.citizenship.gov.au
