Australia Day awards
Darwin City Council stages a major ceremony in January each year to present Australia Day Awards in the categories of:
- Darwin Citizen of the Year Award
- Darwin Young Citizen of the Year Award, and
- Darwin Community Event of the Year Award.
The awards are run in conjunction with the Australia Day Council, which provides publicity and support services in relation to the presentation event.
The awards give members of the Darwin public the chance to pay tribute to people who they feel have achieved in an extra special way within the community.
All nominees for the awards must be Australian citizens and nominees for Young Citizen of the Year must be aged under 26 on Australia Day, 26 January.
Nominations are usually called for around mid to late November and close in late December.
Once the nominations are opened each year, the official forms are readily available through Darwin City Council libraries and other public facilities.
