Installation of Memorials
Prior to the installation of a memorial, a Memorial Permit is required and application forms are available from the Thorak Regional Cemetery, Darwin City Council, local stonemasons, Funeral Directors and the Darwin City Council website: www.darwin.nt.gov.au.
Applications must include the following information:
- Who will be installing the memorial. Memorials are required to be installed by a qualified contractor or the Cemetery Contractor.
- An application fee applies for the issue of the memorial permit and also for the installation of a memorial if installation is to be undertaken by the Cemetery contractor.
Arrangements must be made with the Cemetery Contractor prior to delivery and placement of memorials, contact phone number 8947 0903.
It is a requirement that a Statutory Declaration Form is filled out by ALL immediate family members approving wording on any memorial. The wording must be written clearly on the Statutory Declaration Form, permits will not be approved without a Statutory Declaration Form attached. Section A - Lawn Section
This area consists of grass covered graves with tablet style markers on a concrete base set into a well maintained lawn area. Headstones are not permitted in Section A.
Plaques only permitted and must not exceed: 420 mm x 590 mm
(Please note that this maximum size leaves no allowance for the placement of vases etc on the concrete headbeam as it covers entire area).
Commonly used size: 150 mm x 170 mm
Plaques must be laid flat and are not permitted to be laid on a slant or raised from the ground.
Muslim / Bahai Section - Section A
Memorials for the Muslim or Bahai Sections are as per above (Lawn Section).
Plaques only permitted, headstones are not permitted.

Section B - Limited Memorial size
This section allows for the installation of individual memorials of limited size. A concrete head beam is provided and the area consists of a well maintained lawn.
Headstone maximum size permitted: 700 mm high

Section C - Unrestricted Memorials
Section C has been developed in response to a need for memorial structures of larger dimensions e.g. tombstones. The maximum size of structures in excess of one and a half metres in height require engineering/building certification prior to approval and are required to comply with cyclone code requirements. Please contact the Building Board ph 8999 5511 for structures over 1.5 m in height. No memorial head beam is provided as differing size headstones require differing foundations and engineering requirements. Installation costs of larger memorials are ascertained upon application and approval by the Thorak Cemetery Committee.

Orthodox Section
This section allows for memorial structures of larger dimensions. The maximum size of structures in this location may not exceed the available grave site. The maximum size of structures in excess of one and a half metres in height require engineering/building certification prior to approval and are required to comply with cyclone code requirements. No memorial head beam is provided as differing size headstones require differing foundations and engineering requirements. Installation costs of larger memorials are ascertained upon application and approval by the Thorak Cemetery Committee.

Gardens of Angels – A Section (children up to the age of 2 years)
Headstones are not permitted within the A Section of this area.
Engraved granite or plaques are permitted and must be laid flat. Raised or slanted plaques are not permitted.
Vertical memorials, small statues of angels, birds, animals, teddy bears or toys are permitted to be firmly fixed to the stone, however must not exceed 750mm in height.
Plaques or granite memorials must not exceed: 760 mm wide x 440 mm high x 18 mm thick.
Gardens of Angels – B Section (children up to the age of 10 years)
This section allows for the installation of individual memorials of limited size. A concrete head beam is provided and the area consists of a well maintained lawn.
