Sister cities management committee

The Sister Cities Management Committee meets monthly. The committee is linked directly to Darwin City Council and has delegated authority under the Local Government Act to manage the program within the approved budget.

The committee comprises three elected members, three community representatives and three outside organisations. A Chairperson is elected from within the nine members and is generally a community representative.

The program also has community committees which advise the Sister Cities Management Committee and Council and facilitate the sister city relationship at a community level.

These committees are composed of two elected members, up to six community representatives and two youth ambassadors (young people aged 14-25 years). The chairperson is elected from the appointed community representatives. As well, regularly updated databases of interested parties are maintained for each committee.

Each sister city relationship is unique and offers its own individual benefits and characteristics. The activities of individual committees reflect this and projects can vary greatly from committee to committee, from historical to cultural or from educational to vocational.

As well as nurturing the Sister City relationship by maintaining good communication lines and working on joint projects with counterparts, the community committees promote the program through projects and events in Darwin and respond to local enquires.

Sister City Community Committee meetings are held every six weeks and are open to interested party within the community. Anyone interested in participating is welcome to contact the Sister Cities Project Officer.

Program Resources

The Program is serviced by a full time officer based in the Community Development Section of Darwin City Council's Community Services Directorate.
