Looking after pets in a cyclone

Pets are a much treasured part of many families and should be specially catered for when you're planning for emergencies such as bushfires, cyclones or severe storms. It is best to plan well ahead so that you can avoid unnecessary danger and anxiety for your pets. Think about when you will move your pet and where it will be safe, and make sure you act early to avoid unnecessary risk to your animal. If staying at home, bring pets in early and keep them in a small confined room where they feel safe and comfortable. Failure to do this might mean a pet will become alarmed and run away. They are known to have instincts about impending danger. If your pet is likely to be at risk, you should make every effort to arrange to take it to a safer area in advance. Make sure you provide plenty of non-perishable pet food and feeding bowls, a leash, carry cage, toilet litter, any essential medications and pet's medical history and vet contact details.

The RSPCA advises that animals should only be left behind at home when it is absolutely impossible to move them in advance or to take them with you. As difficult as it will be, any pet likely to suffer a painful death should be put down humanely. Pets left at home during a cyclone should not be tied up. If possible, place them in a small room without windows and leave plenty of food and water in heavy bowls that won't tip over.
