Chime Conservatory – on loan 2008-2009
Location: Chinatown Carpark, Smith St, Darwin CBD
Inspired by the ancient Chinese tradition of the ‘chung pien’ (a court musical instrument consisting of a set of tuned nau bells hung in a sculptured frame), the ‘Chime Conservatory’ has a frame in the form of a Buddhist bell within which is hung a collection of Nau-style bells. This pentatonic set of bells is carefully tuned across an octave from C#4 to C#5. The bells can be played using two soft timber beaters. The frame is laser-cut in steel and assembled with a dragon hanging hoop at its crown. The Buddhist temple bell replaced the chung pien tradition in China during and after the Han dynasty which ended the work of those wonderful bell-founders who sought a musical expression in their bell designs and instruments. This sound-sculpture restarts their long lost work.
