Woolner Road Upgrade

Traffic Management Plan.

Darwin City Council has commenced the construction of a roundabout in Woolner Road as part of its 2008/09 Black Spot Program. Works commenced on the site on Tuesday, 30 June 2009.

The contract period for this project is 16 weeks. The works are expected to be completed by the end of October 2009.

The contract was award to Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd. The awarded contract value is over $2.3 million plus additional works to be undertaken by Darwin City Council.

Woolner Road is an important link between two of Darwin’s major arterial roads, the Stuart Highway and Tiger Brennan Drive and provides vital access for the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service. It has an estimated current daily volume well in excess of 10,000 vehicles per day. In addition, Woolner Road serves two public bus routes and provides access to and from Darwin Central Business Zone, industrial and residential areas.

Works on the Woolner Road project will be completed well before the Wet Season and Darwin City Council will be keeping local resident informed on the progress as to minimize disruption to traffic flows.

Work has commenced on clearing the site and the construction of a new car parking area for the NT Fire and Rescue Services.

All works are currently occurring within vacant land between Woolner Road and the Fire Station with minimal disruption to the flow of traffic on Woolner Road.

Pedestrian detours are currently in place.

The scope of this project includes:

• Woolner Road upgrade - Bishop Street to Brewery Place including road re-alignment of Illiffe Street, a new car park for the NT Fire and Rescue Services, a new roundabout at Brewery lace, landscaping and irrigation, and other works;

• Stuart Highway/Woolner Road intersection upgrading works; and

• Iliffe Street stormwater drainage works.

The Woolner Road project has joint funding from the Australian Government (Black Spot program), the Northern Territory Government and Darwin City Council and has and estimated total value of $2,686,285 (excluding GST).
